Colour grades how colourless a white diamond is, from D (completely colourless) to Z (light yellow). The near-colourless range G-H is the usual sweet spot: it looks white to the eye for far less than D-F. The metal matters too — a warmer face-up grade can look perfect in yellow gold.

What is the best diamond colour grade?
D is the top grade, but G-H (near-colourless) looks white to the eye for much less. In yellow or rose gold you can go as warm as I-J and still look white.
Does the gold colour change which grade I need?
Yes. White gold shows colour more, so D-H is ideal; yellow and rose gold reflect warmth, so near-colourless I-J looks perfectly white and costs less.
Are lab-grown diamonds colour graded too?
Yes, on the same D-Z scale. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by IGI; natural diamonds by GIA or HRD, so the colour grade is independently verified.
What is fluorescence?
Some diamonds glow faintly under UV light. In most cases it has no visible effect; occasionally it can make a lower-colour stone look slightly whiter. We'll flag it if relevant.
