What is usually causing the reaction
Pure gold is very rarely the culprit. It is chemically stable and does not readily react with skin. But pure gold is far too soft for jewellery, so every wearable piece is an alloy — gold mixed with other metals for hardness and colour. Those other metals are where problems usually begin.
Nickel is the best-known trigger and the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis from jewellery. It has historically been used in some white gold alloys and very widely in costume and plated jewellery.
Copper is a different issue and often mistaken for allergy. Copper in an alloy can react with sweat, soap residue and skin acidity to leave a green or grey mark. That mark is a chemical reaction on the skin surface, not usually an immune response, and it washes off.
Trapped moisture explains more irritation than most people expect. Soap and water held under a ring against the skin all day can cause redness that looks exactly like a metal reaction but is not.
Distinguishing these matters, because the solutions are different — and only one of them is about which metal you buy.
Why plating is the bigger problem
A plated piece is a base metal wearing a very thin layer of gold. While that layer is intact, the skin touches gold. Once it wears through — and it wears first exactly where the piece rubs, at the back of a ring, the inside of a bangle, the post of an earring — the skin begins touching whatever is underneath.
This is why plated jewellery so often feels fine for a while and then suddenly does not. Nothing about your skin changed; the surface of the piece did. Replating restores it temporarily, and the cycle repeats.
Solid gold behaves differently for a simple structural reason: there is no layer. The metal at the surface is the metal throughout, so contact with the skin stays the same in year five as it was on day one. We work only in solid 9ct, 14ct and 18ct gold, never plated. How carat affects what touches your skin
Carat is a straightforward measure of how much of the alloy is gold: 9ct is 37.5% gold, 14ct is 58.5%, and 18ct is 75%. The rest is other metal.
The practical consequence is that a higher carat contains proportionally less alloy. An 18ct piece is three-quarters gold; a 9ct piece is closer to a third. If you are sensitive to alloy metals rather than to gold, moving up in carat reduces how much of that alloy is present at the surface.
That is a general principle rather than a guarantee, because what matters is the specific alloy used, not only the ratio. Nickel: what the rules actually say
Nickel in jewellery is regulated in the UK and the EU. The restriction does not ban nickel outright; it limits how much nickel an item may release into the skin over time. The limits are stricter for posts inserted into pierced ears than for items in ordinary prolonged contact such as rings and bracelets.
Two things follow from that. First, "contains no nickel" and "complies with the nickel limits" are different statements, and the second is far more common. Second, an item can be fully compliant and still cause a reaction in someone with a strong sensitivity, because the limit is a threshold rather than a zero.
If you know you react to nickel, the useful question to ask any jeweller is specific: which metals are in this alloy, particularly for white gold? White gold has historically been alloyed with nickel by some makers and with palladium by others, and the two behave very differently on sensitive skin. Ask before you buy rather than after.

Practical steps that usually help
Start with earrings, and start solid. Pierced ears are the most sensitive contact point on the body and the one the regulations treat most strictly. If you are going to spend once, spend there. Our stud earrings guide covers backs and comfort.
Keep pieces clean and dry. Much apparent metal irritation is soap and moisture trapped against skin. Rinse rings after washing your hands, and dry properly before putting them back on.
Take rings off for swimming and cleaning products. Chlorine and household chemicals attack alloys and can leave residues that irritate.
