What a carat actually is
One carat (1.00ct) equals 0.20 grams, and each carat divides into 100 points — so a 0.50ct diamond is often called a "fifty-pointer". Carat measures weight, which is why it isn't the same as visible size: where the weight sits matters. A stone cut with a deep pavilion can carry weight underneath, appearing smaller from above than a well-proportioned diamond of the same carat.
Carat vs face-up size
What people usually mean by "size" is the face-up spread — the millimetre diameter you see from the top. As a rough guide for a round brilliant: 0.50ct sits around 5.0-5.2mm, 1.00ct around 6.4-6.5mm, and 2.00ct around 8.0-8.2mm.
