Diamond Cut Quality Explained
Cut is what makes a diamond sparkle — and it's the C that matters most. Here's how it works and what to look for.

Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets are proportioned and finished — not its shape. It's the biggest driver of sparkle, because good proportions return light back to your eye. A well-cut diamond can outshine a bigger or higher-colour stone, which is why cut is the C worth prioritising.
Why cut creates sparkle
When light enters a well-cut diamond, it bounces between the facets and returns through the top as brightness (brilliance), flashes of colour (fire) and sparkle (scintillation). Cut too shallow or too deep and light leaks out of the sides or bottom, leaving the stone dull or glassy. Proportions, symmetry and polish together decide how lively a diamond looks.
Cut grades

Cut grades on this scale apply mainly to the round brilliant. For that shape, Excellent or Very Good is the target.
Fancy shapes are judged differently
Shapes other than round — oval, emerald, pear, marquise and so on — aren't given a single overall cut grade in the same way. Instead you judge them on proportions, symmetry and how even the light looks across the stone (watch for a dark "bow-tie" across oval, pear and marquise).
